Welcome

Welcome to my blog. I have never been the kind of girl that knew the style of dress I wanted for my wedding, I never had a particular venue in mind, infact I always thought i'd fly away to a paradise island and get married just me and him in the sunshine.

However, my other half is very family orientated and wanted to have all our friends and family with us...so I had a challenge ahead. All I knew is that I didn't want a traditional style wedding, so my search for ideas began.

75 days to go...

75 days to go now until our big fat retro wedding...these last 3 months will be a mixture of emotions. Let's hope I don't get to stressed!

This week has been a productive one as far as wedding plans go. My pink Alexander McQueen heart peep toe shoes arrived...but they weren't right, not the right pink and didn't fit that well. So I started my search again, and found some pink silk shoes in Dorothy Perkins that have only just come out, they look so much better. I'm still going to keep my eye out for white shoes too, you can never have too many shoes.

We have been looking at ideas for music when we are signing the register this week, and we have a few ideas, so we just need to choose 3 of our favorite ones and then that is sorted.

I went looking for wedding make up on Friday and decided I like the look of the Benefit make-up and it is based on retro looks, so I was chatting to the lady on the counter and she advised that they actually offer a free make-over for purchasing customers...so I am going for a trial in May and if I like it they can do it on the day for me, for free. I will be buying a few bits for my make up bag anyway, especially the cute new 'Finding Mr Bright' make-up box, it has a few mini essentials in that I can keep handy on the big day. So that saves me the stress of choosing and buying all the make-up and saves my sister-in-law to be the stress of having to do my make-up while baking cupcakes and helping me get everyone sorted on the wedding morning.

Saturday the Groom and the Best Man went suit shopping, good work guys! They found the perfect grey suits, picked up some smart black shoes and my hubby to be was persuaded to get a white shirt, which I preferred, instead of a black one which he wanted, yey! Just the pink skinny ties to get now, but Next have them so that is the men all kitted out!

While the men were out shopping, one of my bridesmaid's and I went to visit the hairdresser, who was doing a practise run on us, she did an amazing retro style updo on the bridesmaid and I am so excited to see everything come together on the day! We had another practise run on my hair, and I still absolutely love the style I am having, we also had a quick practise of how to have my veil, so that is all decided too.

There is a cake stand that has been in our family for about 50 years, and has been used at most of the family weddings, so I went to collect this from my family members on Saturday so the cake maker (my brilliant sister-in-law) can begin her preparations.

I also stopped in at Ikea on my way past and collected a number of glass jars in different sizes so I begin my candy buffet plans. Next all the sweeties to buy, then I will have to have to be a good girl and not help myself when feeling peckish.

The RSVP's are due by 9th April, so then I will be stressing about the seating plan...what will I do once the wedding is over, I'll need something else to concentrate on...xxx

DIY Candy Buffets

It's been a while since I've posted, I've been so busy and had last weekend away in Dublin. It was nice to have a weekend break away.

Now I'm back, my next wedding task is get the Candy Buffet sorted.

I have my sweet bags, I chose simple white and pink striped bags, but there are so many different kinds out there to choose from. I got mine off eBay, in packs of 100, and I ordered extra as I presented my invitations in them to tie the whole theme together.

My invites say ' Love is Sweet ' on them, and I have found the perfect sweet bag stickers to use as a little extra special addition to add on the sweet bags...They are on eBay and can be personalised.

Amazon do some small sweet scoops that are perfect for a candy buffet.

I also need to get searching for interesting jars, vases and bowls to hold the sweets. I want varied shapes and sizes, I will have a few little jars of 1950's sweets that I know the older guests will enjoy, then I will fill larger jars with the bright coloured sweets such as jelly beans, dolly mixtures and big bowls of marshmallows and flying saucers would be amazing. I want to cater for all my guests, so a good variety will keep everyone happy.

A few ideas for sweets are:

  • Bon Bons
  • Jelly Beans
  • Marshmallows
  • Haribo gummy hearts
  • Love hearts
  • Dolly Mixtures
  • Gummy cherries
  • Flying saucers
  • Rosy Apples
  • Lemon Sherbets
  • Rhubarb and Custard
  • Pear Drops
  • Strawberry laces
  • Peanut Brittle
  • Kola Cubes
  • Lollies
  • Smarties
  • Skittles
  • Fried eggs
  • Cola Bottles
  • Milk Bottles
  • Aniseed Balls
My buffet will also include cake stands full up with yummy flavoured cupcakes being made by my brilliant sister-in-law to be. I've made some little flags on cocktail sticks to dot around with the different flavours written on, and I will make some tags to tie around the jars labelling what the sweets are. Stickers or mini name card style labels would also work. It means everybody knows exactly what is on offer and you can use the labels to continue your theme through to the buffet table.

When buying the sweets, it depends on how many guests you have attending, as I have quite a lot of guests coming I will buy most of the sweets in bulk from a wholesalers.

I think the most stressful part will be laying out the table in the venue, making sure it looks good and not just thrown together. Luckily I have a creative family with a good eye for design, and the event organiser at my venue is also very good, so I'm sure they will all help me put it together perfectly. Here are a few examples:

If you don't fancy a candy buffet, you could have a popcorn buffet:

Or a desert buffet:

Or even a cheese buffet (although it may be a little smelly):
